5 days left to take October photos!

As usual, a short reminder that there are 5 days left, including this weekend, in order to take wildlife photos for the Photo of the Month of October. The weather is nice and sunny, the light is excellent for photography, and many animals are still active before the winter break. If you haven't been out yet this month for photo shooting, now is the time to go. If you want to participate in our monthly wildife competition, then please send us your photos until November 3rd at the latest.

Here are some of the most important rules:
- A maximum of 5 photos can be sumbitted per person per month.
- Photos should not exceed 1200 pixels width and 900 pixels hight.
- Please do not include any names or watermarks in the photos or the EXIF-data.
- The main subject of the photo should be wildlife (a non-domestic wild animal).
- Any wildlife (wild animal) is allowed, as long as it has been photographed within the borders of Greece.
- Pets and animals in captivity are not accepted.
- If you can, try to include the species name in the title of the photo.

Happy shooting!

Winner Photo of the Month, September 2011:     Nikos Fokas

Congratulations to Nikos Fokas, who won the September competition with his excellent shot of a Spotted Flycatcher:

1st Place: Nikos Fokas

The second place went to Tassos Sakoulis, for his equally fascinating shot of a Whiskered Tern: Congratulations, here too!

2nd Place: Tassos Sakoulis

The third place is won by Nikos Samaritakis, who managed to capture two in one: Lesser Emperor in front of a Coot. Congratulations Niko!

3rd Place: Nikos Samaritakis

Again, we'd like to thank all the participants and voters for their participation!

This second edition of the PM-competition happened somewhat smoother than the first, in particular with the voting. We are happy to report that we didn't have to eliminate any biased votes this time, and that the overall participation, although slightly below the level of the first edition, was a very satisfying experience. Most of the photos were at the correct size, didn't have the owner's name in the EXIF data, and named the species in the title, which sort of facilitates my work. The quality of the photos remained very high, and viewing them was, and is, a pleasure, this month too.

We are already looking forward to see the photos of October, so please keep on shooting and submitting, all... καλή τύχη!

Please feel free also to leave comments with the photos, in the Gallery:

Photo of the Month: September voting is now open

As usal, first a big "thank you" to all who have participated in this month' photo competition!
There were not quite as many participants as last month, but in the end we still got a very good number of 56 photos from 18 photographers. It's about a quarter less than the first edition, but this was somewhat expected with people having finished their holidays. Of course we hope to pass the 100-photos-per-month barrier until the end of the year... so keep on shooting people!

The voting sheet is now available here below: please remember to vote for the best photos instead of for your best friends...!

Voting is allowed for all members of the EOE (HOS), the Greek Nature Photography Forum, or for people who have participated in at least one Photo of the Month competition (can be the current one).

Thank you for your vote!

Voting will start on October 4th and last for one week, like last time. There will be another annoucement here when it's open.

Winner Photo of the Month July-August 2011: Nikos Boukas-Anestis

We are happy to announce the winner of the first Photo of the Month competition, Nikos Boukas-Anestis, for his great shot of a Wood-Sandpiper: Congratulations!

1st Place: Nikos Boukas-Anestis

The second place went to Nikos Fokas, known already as the winner of two categories of the last annual Photo Bird Race, for his exellent shot of the two Pallid Swifts: Congratulations here, too!

2nd Place: Nikos Fokas

Well, I'm not going to congratulate myself, but thanks to all who voted for my photo anyway!

3rd Place: Felix Rehsteiner

First of all, we'd like to say a big THANK YOU to all the people who have participated, with their great wildlife photos, their votes, their friendly comments, or with all together!!!

It was the first edition of the Photo of the Month for everybody, so things did not always go as smoothly as wished with the voting, but finally I think we managed to come through with a fair system - which focuses on electing the best photos instead of the photographer who has the most friends. Our voting system needs to be refined still in the future, but in general it has worked well this first time.

We are also thinking of introducing animal categories in the future, but need to see first how the participation will be in the next two month. If there are enough animals for categories such as reptiles and insects, we might split the photos up into catgories, in order to make the voting easier.

Therefore: we need your participation, not only now, but in the future, too!

Thanks to all, and happy shooting for Semptember!

The full classement according to the photo numbers as well as the full voting sheet can be looked up under the links here below. The photo gallery has been updated with the photographer's names now.

One day left for voting...

For those who haven't voted yet, the voting sheet for the PM July-August will be open until tomorrow night, and results will be published on monday or tuesday. So far we have around 20 valid votes, but we would like to see more, so if you have 5 minutes to spare please vote!

To remind you, voting is allowed for members of the EOE, members of the Greek Nature Photography forum, or for people who have participated in at least one of the competitions.

Meanwhile the competition for September is going on, so feel free to submit photos if you have some already!

Κυριακή 4 Σεπτεμβρίου 2011

PM: Voting for July/August open, photos for September can be submitted

Submission for the frist edition of the Photo of the Month competition has ended, while photos for September can be submitted already.

The final numbers:
25 photographers have submitted 84 photos, of which 56 are of birds, followed by 18 insects, 4 reptiles, 5 aquatic animals, and 1 mammal. Although I'd sure like to see more mammals in the future (not easy here in Greece), I am glad we were able to cover all major animal categories.
The quality of the photos is generally very high, so it will be extremely difficult to make a choice. Nevertheless we ask you to look carefully through them, and to vote for your 5 favorites through the voting sheet!

Once more, we would like to thank all photographers who have participated, and hope to get even more photos this month!!!

A few reminders for the voting system:
- The voting is allowed for all members of the HOS/EOE, members of the Greek Nature Photography Forum (see special links on the right side), or for persons who have themselves participated at least once in the "Photo of the Month" competition (can be the current one).
- Each voter can give 5 votes: 5 points for the best, 4 points for the second, and 3 point for the third, 2 points for the fourth, and 1 point for the fifth best photo.
- Voting for your own photos is strictly prohibited. Each voter can vote only once!

Photo of the Month, first edtition: THANKS TO ALL!

August is over, so the photo-taking period for the first edition of the Photo of the Month -competition (I will use the shortage "PM" in the future) has ended. There are still three days left for submitting the photos, but one thing is already clear: it was a great success, thanks to all who have participated!

So far we have 25 photographers who submitted a stunning total of 81 photos! And what is the most pleasant thing to see, is that the quality of most photos is nothing short of outstanding ...μπράβο παιδιά!

Of course we don't stop here, after all there comes September after August... and with it the fall-migration of many bird-species! So we are already waiting for your next PM's submissions, keep on taking photos out there... we hope to increase the participation even furhter this time!

The voting sheet for July-August will be made available in around 4 days from now, around September 4th-5th. Meanwhile you can see the already submitted photos here: Photo Gallery
If you use the "Slideshow" button, the photos look even better and can be seen at full-size.

Happy shooting to all!

Τρίτη 30 Αυγούστου 2011

PM: 1 day left for July-August

For those who haven't submitted their photos yet, we remind you that tomorrow is the last day that photos can be taken for the current Photo of the Month competition. Submission is open until September 3rd, while the new competition starts on September 1st.

We'd also like to remind you a few important rules:
- Please do not embed your name into the EXIF-file, nor into the title of your photo.
- A maximum of 5 photos can be sumbitted per person per month.
- Photos should not exceed 1200 pixels width, or 900 pixels hight.
- The main subject of the photo should be wildlife (a non-domestic wild animal).
- Any wildlife (wild animal) is allowed, as long as it has been photographed within the borders of Greece.

All in all we are exremely pleased with the participation: 23 photographers sent in 68 photos so far! For a start, and considering the low-activity season (humans and animals) this is a very pleasing number, which we of course hope to even increase in the future.

The voting sheet will be made available around September 4-5th, so please keep on peeking in here!

Felix
